Introduction to GCG

GCG is a comprehensive genetic sequence analysis software package, first developed in the 1970's at the University of Wisconsin. It is, therefore, also referred to as the Wisconsin Package. We will be using some of the over 130 programs in the GCG package for analyzing data from nucleic acid and protein sequences.

 Starting GCG:
To start GCG type gcg to the helix prompt. GCG has a manual describing all of the programs in the package. To access the manual type genhelp. When you are viewing pages of this manual, use <CTR> + B to go back to the previous page.
There is also an online manual located here. When you enter this site for the first time, go here, and register. You will need to remember your username and password and use them each time you visit this site. At the bottom of the page, click UNIX. It is strongly recommended that you read the Overview in the User's Manual under Chapter 1. This will familiarize you with the Unix operating system and has a good explanation on working with files and directories in the Unix operating system.
